West China Clinical Medical Education Alliance Officially Established and Its 2022 Annual Academic Conference Opened!

At 8:00 a.m. on October 15, 2022, 2022 Annual Academic Conference of West China Clinical Medical Education Alliance, co-sponsored by West China Clinical Medical Education Alliance, West China School of Medicine/West China Hospital, Sichuan University and Sichuan International Medical Exchange & Promotion Association (SCIMEA), was grandly opened in Chengdu.
On the occasion of the 130th anniversary of the founding of West China School of Medicine/West China Hospital, Sichuan University, West China School of Medicine of Sichuan University took the lead to join hands with affiliated hospitals and clinical medical schools of 27 renowned colleges and universities from 12 provinces (cities and regions) in western China to establish West China Clinical Medical Education Alliance, aiming to build an academic exchange platform for clinical teaching in western China, promote and guide the affiliated hospitals and clinical medical schools of colleges and universities to update their educational concepts of clinical medicine, build and share high-quality teaching resources, strengthen the main talent training bases of university-affiliated hospitals, accelerate the construction of a model clinical teaching & training quality assurance system, and focus on building a high-level clinical faculty.
The opening ceremony was hosted by Prof. Wang Kunjie, Vice President of West China School of Medicine/West China Hospital, Sichuan University. Prof. Wang talked about the Alliance’s aim to accelerate the innovation and development of medical education, improve the training quality of medical personnel, establish a mechanism to guarantee clinical practice, and provide a high level of talent guarantee for maintaining people’s life and health. The Alliance will build a platform for clinical teaching communication and cooperation in the western regions, promote complementary advantages and resource sharing, and further boost the high-quality innovation and development of clinical medical education in western China!

The opening ceremony was attended by several leaders and guest speakers, including Yu Xiaoqi, Director of the Education Department of Sichuan Province, Du Xian, Editor-in-Chief of People’s Medical Publishing House, Zhang Lin, Vice President of Sichuan University, Luo Fengming, Executive Deputy Secretary of West China School of Medicine/West China Hospital, Sichuan University, as well as more than one hundred experts from online and offline to witness the event!
On behalf of West China School of Sichuan University/West China Hospital, Mr. Luo Fengming expressed his warmest welcome to all the guests and colleagues attending the conference. He noted that the core of establishing a quality and efficient health service system for people’s life and health is to cultivate excellent creative medical talents. West China School of Sichuan University/West China Hospital has been upholding the concept of collaborative talent training of medical education and research, and has built a competency-oriented training system of excellent medical students covering school education, post-graduation education and continuing education. He hoped that the experts and scholars would inject new ideas, new inspirations and new dynamics into the Alliance through this conference, and work together to shape a new pattern of high-quality development of clinical medical education in western China, and contribute to the construction of a healthy China!

Vice President Zhang Lin of Sichuan University warmly congratulated on the conference and expressed his heartfelt thanks to all the experts for their hard work. Mr. Zhang mentioned that in recent years, Sichuan University has vigorously promoted the medical planning and development of West China Hospital and accelerated to promote the overall medical quality of West China Hospital to reach world-class level. He hoped that all members of the Alliance will, from the overall situation of medical education, accurately identify the changes, scientifically seek changes, actively adapt to changes, work together to jointly build a solid academic exchange platform for clinical teaching in western China, promote and guide the clinical schools and affiliated hospitals of universities to update medical education concepts, jointly build and share high-quality teaching resources, strengthen the main talent training bases of university-affiliated hospitals, accelerate the construction of a model clinical teaching & training quality assurance system, promote the organic linkage of medical education in universities, post-graduation education and continuing education, drive to enhance the education and training level of clinical practice teaching bases in western China, and comprehensively improve the quality of medical personnel training.

Du Xian, Editor-in-Chief of People’s Medical Publishing House, said in his speech that the conference was held at the historic moment of the 130th birthday of West China Hospital of Sichuan University, which will lay a solid foundation for clinical medical education research, high-quality development and talent cultivation in western China, as well as for exploring the development laws and mechanisms of medical education in the region. He hoped that People’s Medical Publishing House and West China Clinical Medical Education Alliance will jointly launch an innovative cooperation platform, summarize the experience, ideas, culture, spirit as well as the results of teaching reform and innovation of the West China Clinical Medical Education Alliance, and share the wisdom, experience and achievements for talent cultivation in the western region and the entire China and even for the construction of a community with a shared future for mankind, so as to create a new future for medical education.

In his speech, Director Yu Xiaoqi pointed out that medical education is an important cornerstone for the development of health care, which is related to the vital interests of the people and the happy life of thousands of families. The Alliance should strive to promote the integration of quality improvement of clinical medical education, the integration of project platform construction carrier, the integration of education resources sharing and the integration of system guarantee reform and innovation in western China, build an excellent regional collaborative network of clinical medical education, and cultivate clinical medical talents fit for the balanced development of medical quality in western China. Based on the basic national and provincial conditions, the Alliance should, oriented by service demand, promote the construction of new medicine, focus on innovation of systems and mechanisms, cultivate research-oriented, interdisciplinary and application-oriented clinical medical talents, comprehensively improve the quality of talent training, and provide strong talent guarantee for promoting the construction of a healthy China and safeguarding people’s health.

During the conference, the signing and inauguration ceremony of West China-Intuitive Fosun da Vinci Surgical Robot International Training Center was held. The successful signing of the international training center signifies the international talent training base jointly built by West China School of Medicine, Sichuan University and Intuitive Fosun is officially opened. This will further promote the innovative talent training model of West China School of Medicine, provide strong support for cultivating high-quality clinical medical talents, and accelerate the construction of an excellent medical talent training system!

Prof. Wang Kunjie from West China School of Medicine/West China Hospital, Sichuan University gave a keynote presentation to share the development history of clinical medical education at West China School of Medicine, emphasizing the importance of fundamentals and practice, and gaining international recognition for the quality of education and international openness to foreign exchange. With the goal of cultivating outstanding medical leaders, West China School of Medicine strives to cultivate medical talents with profound humanistic spirit, good professional quality, solid professional knowledge, skilled clinical skills, strong sense of innovation and broad international vision.

Prof. Liu Chang from the First Affiliated Hospital of Xi’an Jiaotong University introduced the purpose of medical humanistic quality cultivation from multiple perspectives, including 1 goal, 3 principles, 6 concurrent priorities and 1 set of activity system, pointing out that medical humanistic quality cultivation especially cultivates students’ expertise and professional quality. He noted that we should base on western China to aim to the world, and strive to create a good humanistic ecosystem.

Prof. Pan Xiaoyan from the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangxi Medical University pointed out that the cultivation of clinical ability is the core part of medical postgraduate education, and it is also the basic requirement for medical students to become qualified clinicians, so we must continuously optimize the teaching system of professional master program, continue to improve the teaching quality of professional master program, and help to push the teaching foundation of professional master program to reach a new level.

Prof. Zhabsan Jr. from the School of Medicine of Tibet University mentioned that the hospitals should pay attention to cross-discipline and integration. Supported by five undergraduate specialties of clinical medicine, nursing, preventive medicine, pharmacy and stomatology, we should strive to give full play to the resource advantages, regional advantages and ethnic traditional advantages, and strengthen the construction of high altitude medicine. With the support and assistance of “team-based” paired universities, we should establish and improve the modern medical education system in Tibet, refine the layout of higher medical specialties, accelerate the construction of faculty, and continuously improve the quality of talent training.

Prof. Du Yong from North Sichuan Medical College said that medical education undertaken by medical schools focuses on two major projects of people’s livelihood, namely education and health, which can be said as “one shoulder bears two responsibilities related to millions of families”. It is an arduous task for national strategies and social needs and is concerned by both the government and the people. He elaborated the reform and practice methods for clinical medical undergraduate talent training models suitable for regional economic development under the current environment.

Prof. Wang Donghong from the Affiliated Hospital of Zunyi Medical University briefed the overall situation of the comprehensive reform of “Nanshan Class” of clinical medicine, pointing out that in order to accelerate the innovative development of medical education, it is essential to explore the new path of reforming the excellent medical talent training models under the new situation. She hoped that through this conference, the reform path will be further clarified, the top-level design improved, and the direction indicated for the next reform.

Prof. Luo Yingwei from the First Affiliated Hospital of Kunming Medical University noted that the reform and innovation of the teaching system of clinical medicine should center on the students. The reform should be carried out through “five systems”, namely, faculty training, curriculum, resources, student evaluation and teacher evaluation. Focusing on the “core academic literacy cultivation”, we should create a total, whole-course and all-round student evaluation system that emphasizes and reflects the main role of students, which can help students deepen their learned knowledge and concepts, and promote knowledge construction and self-improvement through student participation in teaching.

In addition to the main forum, seven sub-forums were also set up at the conference, respectively on undergraduate education, postgraduate education, post-graduation education, medical simulation teaching, nursing education, innovation and development of medical technology higher education, and ideological and political education salon. More than 100 practitioners from various related professional fields were invited to participate in the conference online and offline, comprehensively displaying the latest progress and achievements in the field of clinical medical education, and witnessing the development of clinical medical education in western China. The conference has further implemented the national strategies of “Health China” and “Western Development”.
It is believed that the official establishment of “West China Clinical Medical Education Alliance” will build an educational innovation communication and cooperation platform for education managers, researchers, university teachers and employers at all levels of medical schools/hospitals to achieve shared growth through discussion and collaboration. The Alliance will, centering on the core goals of excellent doctor education and training, promote the renewal of concepts and methods and practical innovation in undergraduate and postgraduate training, standardized training of resident physicians and clinical teacher training, enhance the level of clinical practice education and training in western China, and comprehensively improve the quality of high-level medical personnel training.
