Gather in Chengdu to discuss anesthesia and look into the future together. In the height of summer, the First Tianfu Summit of Anesthesia and Pain Medicine and the Specialized Forum of Anesthesia and Pain Medicine of Sichuan Academy of Medical Sciences/Sichuan Provincial People’s Hospital, hosted by Sichuan Academy of Medical Sciences/Sichuan Provincial People’s Hospital, co-organized by Sichuan Academy of Medical Sciences/Anesthesia Surgery Center of Sichuan Provincial People’s Hospital and Sichuan International Medical Exchange & Promotion Association (SCIMEA), was successfully held in the beautiful Chengdu on July 16-17, 2022. The summit adopted a combination of offline and online methods, attracting nearly 100,000 people to watch live streaming.

At the opening ceremony, Ou Lisheng, Secretary of the Party Committee of Sichuan Academy of Medical Sciences/Sichuan Provincial People’s Hospital, Prof. Huang Yuguang from the Department of Anesthesiology of Peking Union Medical College Hospital, Chairman of Chinese Society of Anesthesiology and Director of National Anesthesia Quality Control Center, Prof. Liu Jin, Director of Anesthesia Surgery Center of West China Hospital of Sichuan University, President of  Anesthesia Branch of SCIMEA, and Advisor of Anesthesia Surgery Center of  Sichuan Academy of Medical Sciences/Sichuan Provincial People’s Hospital, and Song Shigui, member of the leading Party group and Deputy Director of the Health Commission of Sichuan Province, and a first-class inspector, successively delivered opening speeches.

Mr. Ou Lixiang firstly expressed his warm congratulations on the successful convening of the summit. He then mentioned that General Secretary Xi Jinping paid a visit to Sichuan province in June this year. During his visit, Xi made a special trip to Yongfeng Village Clinic in Meishan city, and he emphasized that the most important concern of the villagers is medicine after they have no worries about food and clothing, and that the medical service capacity of anesthesia is closely related to the safety and comfort of people’s medical treatment, which is a key part to the “Health China” Strategy. Sichuan Academy of Medical Sciences/Sichuan Provincial People’s Hospital will focus on the goal of building a national first-class clinical research-oriented hospital, and spare no effort to propel the high-quality development of the hospital, safeguard people’s life and health, and promote the construction of disciplines, the introduction of talent, and the transformation of scientific and technological achievements. Mr. Ou Lixiang expected all the experts and representatives to exchange views in this academic conference, and effectively promote the development of anesthesia and pain medicine research to a new level; He also looked forward to actively working with the 53 alliance hospitals in scientific research and teaching, talent training, discipline construction and resource sharing, and contributing more to the better implementation of the tiered diagnosis and treatment system and primary medical and health care services. Prof. Huang Yuguang said this year’s Two Sessions, the biweekly seminars of National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and the “1000-County Project” recently launched by the National Health Commission and other projects all focused on the construction of the primary care system and county hospitals to boost development. While achieving high-quality development, large hospitals should also strive to deliver high-quality medical resources to the grassroots units, do a good job in targeted primary care assistance and drive the overall development of county-wide medical institutions. Anesthesia is a high-risk sector and a pivotal department in hospitals. Its importance in the development of modern medicine is increasingly prominent. However, the conflict between supply and demand still exists. To promote solid development of anesthesiology at this time is a beneficial and important initiative for hospitals and the medical community. Prof. Huang Yuguang believed Sichuan province will continue to be at the forefront of anesthesiology in China. Finally, He wished this conference a complete success!

Prof. Liu Jin noted there should be one anesthesiologist for every 10,000 people according to the goal of anesthesiologist training in China. However, the goal is not yet reached, and we still have a lot of work to do. More importantly, after starting the anesthesiology career, anesthesiologists need to improve their expertise through residency training, and at the same time, the expertise and competency of nurses in anesthesiology also need to be improved. Modern society has a lot of expectations for anesthesiologists. At present, painless surgery, painless delivery, painless endoscopy and painless rehabilitation have been carried out, and whether to carry out painless departure in the next step needs further study. Today is the first session of the forum, and Prof. Liu Jin believed there will be more sessions in the future that can be held successfully to promote the flourishing development of anesthesia and pain medicine in Sichuan province.

Mr. Song Shigui said that anesthesiology is an important element of clinical medicine, and the urgent need to improve the service capability of this specialty is the outstanding problem of anesthesia and pain medicine at present. In order to promote the high-quality development of anesthesia services, China has issued a series of documents such as “Opinions on Strengthening and Improving Anesthesia Services” and “Guidelines for Building the Medical Service Capacity of Anesthesiology”, clearly pointing out that the medical services of anesthesiology cover clinical anesthesia, pain treatment, monitoring and treatment, emergency resuscitation and other outpatient and inpatient services. These documents also emphasize that medical institutions at all levels should strengthen the team building of anesthesiology department, employ more anesthesiologists, optimize the structure of anesthesia professionals, expand anesthesia services and other fields, strengthen the management of anesthesia quality and safety, enhance the capacity of anesthesia services of primary medical units, improve the motivation of anesthesia personnel and increase the professional attractiveness of anesthesia personnel, meet the new demand for anesthesia services, and provide the people with all-round and full-cycle comfort services and safeguards. The forum and the joint construction of the alliance is a practical initiative to implement the capacity construction of the specialty. Experts in anesthesia and pain medicine from the whole province and other places of China gathered together through a combination of online and offline methods, to actively communicate with and learn from each other. With the joint efforts of everyone, the anesthesia and pain medicine in Sichuan province will surely achieve great development in the future.

Prof. Lei Qian said during the awarding ceremony of the alliance that, as China’s current medical reform continues to deepen, how to achieve the integration of regional medical resources is an important livelihood issue facing governments at all levels, and the establishment of medical consortiums and specialty alliances is an important means of integrating medical resources. As one of the leading hospitals in Sichuan, Sichuan Provincial People’s Hospital enjoy better advantages in talents, technology, equipment and management. It is the responsibility and role of Sichuan Provincial People’s Hospital to deliver high-quality medical resources to the grassroots hospitals and help them improve their medical capacity, and the establishment of the alliance of anesthesia and pain medicine on the basis of medical consortium is of great significance to truly integrate medical resources. This day of last year, the anesthesia and pain medicine alliance led by the Sichuan Academy of Medical Sciences/Anesthesia Surgery Center of Sichuan Provincial People's Hospital was officially established, representatives of anesthesia and pain medicine from more than 50 general hospitals, specialized hospitals and hospitals of traditional Chinese medicine in Sichuan witnessed the important moment. With the strong support of leaders at all levels, experts and colleagues , the members of the  anesthesia and pain medicine alliance of Sichuan Provincial People’s Hospital will be able to live up to the expectations, achieve complementary advantages, integrate resources and conduct win-win cooperation, making important contributions to the development of anesthesia and pain medicine in Sichuan.

During the two-day academic conference, the participants renewed their friendship and talked about the blueprints.
